Comments & Reviews:
“Check any bookstore and you’ll find a host of titles on writing. Some
are good, some not so good. Every author has his or her own strengths
and weaknesses. But in Brewing Fine Fiction: Advice for writers from the authors at Book View Café, you get a smorgasbord of professional advice
and expertise. From the plausibility of fantasy, by Ursula K. Le Guin, to
Deborah J. Ross’s comments on reviews, you’ll find every facet of the craft
and writing life covered. For the wealth of information, experience,
and diversity, all under one cover, you can’t beat it.”
— Mary Rosenblum, Longridge Writers Group Instructor
“This is an excellent introduction to writing fiction which is
divided into five sections: The Basics, Craft, Research, Marketing Your Work,
and The Writing Life. There are 36 chapters, each written by a different hand,
so this is very much a collaborative effort drawn together by a pair of very
skilful editors. It takes you through the whole process of writing a novel or
short story from blank page to finished article either on the book shelf or in
the magazine. Wherever you look, you find interesting ides like never thinking
of Writer’s Block again: think of it as the much more positive and opportunistic
Writing Gap.”

“Brewing Fine
Fiction is a definite necessity for every writer looking for straightforward,
fun writing suggestions and advice. This book will not disappear under the dust
accumulating on the other writer’s guides on the bookshelf. Brewing Fine Fiction
is a recommended read for a reader/writer looking for a guide to use repeatedly.”

“The organization of the
individual pieces along a hypothetical career path — from ‘The Basics’ to ‘The
Writer’s Life’ — is minimal but effective. While some of the more esoteric
topics (e.g., how to get on Worldcon panels) will be of little use to the
beginner or ‘mainstream’ fiction writer, all have some useful information or
inspiration to offer. (Or, in some cases, a welcome dash of realism: Sara
Zettel’s essay in particular is an excellent reminder not only that the ultimate
technique is ‘whatever works,’ but also that sustaining a writing career
is, if anything, more difficult than beginning one.)
“Recommended for
those who like reading what working writers have to say about the craft.
Highly recommended for those with an interest in the practical aspects of
writing popular/genre fiction.”
