Barbary
Vonda N. McIntyre
Barbary is emigrating from Earth to Einstein, the orbital science space station. But she has a secret — and no one she can trust.
The Writer’s Cut:
I wrote Barbary in 1986, when security at airports
was less stringent than it is today. Will security at spaceports be equally
stringent? I hope that won’t be necessary.
I considered revising the text, but once a writer begins revising
a published book, there’s probably no stopping.
The book, which I wrote for younger readers, does include one correction from the first edition,
replacing a change I originally made under protest. My editor believed nobody younger than 21 knows or ever uses any profanity. This isn’t
true now and it wasn’t true then, so I changed it back.

Flashes of Illumination
Nancy Jane Moore
Nancy Jane Moore wrote her first flash fiction many years ago when every one in her writing group decided to enter a contest for one-page stories. None of them won, but she got hooked and has been writing short-shorts ever since. Her first project for Book View Café was; posting a free flash fiction every week for a year. Some were reprints, others older stories that needed one more revision, but quite a few were written in the week they went up. This 52-story collection includes most of those stories and a few new ones as well.

Denim and Lace
A romance
Patricia Rice
Samantha Neely thought she might have to kill Sloan Talbott. Talbott had
already tried to run her and her family out of town, and now she
finally had her chance to confront the man she believed responsible for
her father’s disappearance. To do so, she had to prove she was woman
enough to bring down the handsomest, most sinfully dangerous man she’d
ever met.
Sloan Talbott called Sam a ragtag redheaded tomboy, but her honeyed
voice taunted him. In denims, she made him crazy. In lace, she made him
wild. Concealing his own private demons, Sloan didn’t need a woman like
Sam revealing what kind of man he really was. He couldn’t let himself
love her, but he couldn’t stop wanting her. Instead, he offered her a
proposition she ought to refuse…

BVC Announces eBook Edition of An Unsafe Pair of Hands, by Chris Dolley |

An Unsafe Pair of Hands
Chris Dolley
An Unsafe Pair of Hands is a quirky murder mystery set in rural England
charting the descent and rise of a detective on the verge of a nervous
breakdown.
Peter Shand is the ‘safe pair of hands’ — a high-flying police
administrator seconded to a quiet rural CID team to gain the operational
experience he needs for promotion. On his second day he’s thrust into a
high-profile murder case. A woman’s body is discovered in an old stone
circle — with another woman buried beneath her.
The pressure on Shand is enormous. The case is baffling. There appears
to be no link between the two crimes. The media is clamouring for
answers. And Shand’s convinced his wife is having an affair with someone
called Gabriel.
Which just happens to be the name of the two chief suspects. Both are
womanisers, and both mention a mystery woman — who sounds suspiciously
like Shand’s wife — as their alibi. The pressure builds. Shand can’t
sleep, a local journalist is out to discredit him, his wife is about to
be dragged into the case and then, goaded at a press conference about
lack of progress, he invents a lead. And keeps on lying — to the press,
his boss, his team — telling himself that he’sll solve the case before
anyone finds out.
And then another murder occurs. And had there been a third?
Shand begins to doubt his ability. He’s desperate, increasingly
unpredictable, pursued by an amorous psychic, and somehow gaining a
reputation for arresting livestock.
Which will break first? The case, or Shand?
