The Dread Hammer
Stories of the Puzzle Lands — Book 1
Linda Nagata
Ketty is a pretty shepherdess with a contrary nature, who runs away from
home to escape an unwanted marriage. As she flees along the forest
road, she prays to the Dread Hammer for help — and to her astonishment
help comes in the form of a charming and well-armed young murderer named
Smoke. As Ketty soon discovers, Smoke is not entirely human.
Smoke, too, is taken by surprise at their encounter. He had lurked
beside the forest road intending to pierce hearts and slit throats, not
to fall in love. But love it is — or it would be — if only he can
convince Ketty that marriage is better than death.
But just when happily-ever-after seems within reach, Smoke’s past
returns to claim him. A deserter from the Koráyos army, his supernatural
skill at killing is still very much in demand. Now the army wants him
back.
The Dread Hammer is an enthralling, dark tale of love, war, murder, marriage, and fate.

Skye Object 3270a
Linda Nagata
In an isolated star system far from any other human
outposts, a space-faring “lifeboat” was discovered by a scientist
from the city of Silk. Inside the lifeboat was a two-year-old girl in frozen
sleep. She had no name and no history. The people of Silk believed her to be
the only survivor of a star-faring great ship attacked in the void and
destroyed by the automated warships of the alien Chenzeme. They rescued and
revived the child, and named her “Skye.”
But the people of Silk face dangers of their own. Their
city is in space, built around the column of a space elevator that rises from
the planet's surface into high orbit. Three-hundred kilometers below is the
wild, plague-ridden planet called Deception Well. Far-above, a dusty nebula
shrouds the star system. The nebula is made of drifting dust, gas, and tiny
nanomachines left behind by an ancient and mysterious race. The microscopic
nanomachines were made to attack and destroy any Chenzeme ship that enters the
system... but they will defend against other threats too, and they have no
loyalty to human life.
Still, life in Silk is comfortable, and the dangers of
their world mean little to the city’s youth. Skye has grown into an
adventurous, independent teen — but more and more she wonders about her
mysterious past. Where did she come from? Who were her parents? And, most
importantly, was she really the only survivor? When evidence of her past begins
to awaken within her own body, Skye finds herself driven to explore both the
dangerous surface of Deception Well and the airless reaches of outer space.
She is not alone in her quest. Her best friend Zia
Adovna, the handsome young astronomer Devi Hand, and the adventurous Buyu Mkolu
join her as she seeks to prove that other survivors of the great ship might
still be found.

Tech-Heaven
a prequel to the Nanotech Succession
Linda Nagata
For Katie Kishida, the nanotechnology revolution begins
with an act of love. Katie is a young mother with a successful career and a
loving marriage, when her perfect life is shattered by the sudden death of her
husband, Tom. Putting her faith in a science that hasn’t been invented yet,
Katie has Tom’s body placed in cryonic suspension—frozen in liquid nitrogen against
a time when advances in nanotechnology might heal his injuries and restore his
life. Katie never suspects the consequences that will follow. Tom’s death and
his costly entombment spark immediate political controversy. It’s a debate that
only grows more passionate as the years pass. Katie’s life is taken over by the
need to defend her husband’s future and to shepherd into existence the
controversial technologies that might let him live again... even as she’s
haunted by the question: Does Tom really want to come back?
Tech-Heaven is a compelling story of devotion and
unyielding determination set amid the tumultuous politics of our time, in a
world that is teetering on the cusp of a technological revolution like no other

Limit of Vision
Linda Nagata
Virgil Copeland, Randall Panwar, and Gabrielle Villanti are
all brilliant young biotechnologists, working together on an artificial
life-form affectionately known as “LOVs,” an acronym for Limit Of Vision,
because in size LOVs are just at the boundary of what the human eye can easily
see.
LOVs contain bioengineered human neurons. They enhance
brain function when implanted in test animals. Experimentation on humans is, of
course, highly illegal. But it’s the nature of brilliant and ambitious young
minds to ignore the rules. Believing the LOVs to be perfectly safe, Virgil,
Panwar, and Gabrielle experiment on themselves, using implanted LOVs to enhance
their own cognitive abilities.
But there is a limit of vision, too, when we try to
foresee the consequences of technology—especially of a living, thinking
technology that can evolve into new forms in a matter of hours.
When the experiment goes terribly wrong, the
consequences are bizarre and unforeseeable. Virgil finds himself on the run,
riding the whirlwind of a runaway biotechnology that could lead to the next
phase of human evolution.

| The Bohr Maker - Nanotech Succession 1 |
The Bohr Maker
Linda Nagata
Nikko is the first true “post human”—a man genetically
engineered to survive in the airless void of space—but the research permit that
allows his existence is about to expire. His body has already begun an
insidious, pre-programmed failure that will end in his death. Nikko’s only hope
for survival rides on an illegal and extremely powerful nanotech device known
as the Bohr Maker, that will allow him to rewrite his genetic code and extend
his life. He attempts to steal the Maker from the archives of the Commonwealth
police, but his plan goes awry. The device escapes into the wild, infecting a
young woman named Phousita who lives in an impoverished slum where
nanotechnology is regulated only by the black market. Phousita’s genetic code
is rewritten by the Maker. Her senses are enhanced, and she gains extraordinary
powers of healing, but like Nikko she has become a fugitive. The Commonwealth
police are on the hunt, determined to sterilize all traces of the Bohr Maker
before it can be copied and spread throughout the population. Together,
Phousita and Nikko must evade a ruthless pursuit, both to preserve their own
lives and to save the Bohr Maker, which holds the promise of re-defining
humanity—for good or for ill.
A brilliantly original, fast-paced thriller, The Bohr Maker
won the Locus Award for Best First Novel.

Deception Well
Book Two of the Nanotech Succession
Linda Nagata
Lot is a young man haunted by the past. As a boy he came
with his father’s fanatic army to the sky city of Silk, perched on the column
of a space elevator 200 miles above the planet known as Deception Well. Battle ensued,
thousands were killed, and Lot’s father disappeared, while Lot was made a
ward—or a prisoner—of the Silken government. Now he wants the truth. The people
of Silk claim the wild, unsettled world of Deception Well is a deadly stew of
runaway nanotech, the fallout of an ancient, alien war. But Lot’s father once
visited the planet’s lush surface and survived. Jupiter Apolinario was a
charismatic leader who preached that the Well offered life, not death. He
promised his disciples they would find refuge and an ecstatic communion when
they followed him to the planet’s surface.
Lot isn’t so sure—and then human “ghosts” are videoed,
walking within the ruins of a long-abandoned settlement at the foot of the
elevator column. Is it a trick? Or is it redemption? Lot is determined to find
out. But he is a charismatic too, with a seductive presence. As the city’s
resources run low, conflict ignites around him, and when Silk is rocked by
revolt Lot is forced to flee. His only refuge: the haunted world of Deception Well,
where he will discover a past deeper than he’d ever imagined, and a razor-thin
dividing line between bliss and damnation.

Vast
Book 3 of the Nanotech Succession
Linda Nagata
Aboard Null Boundary,
a giant starship thousands of years old, four survivors of an ancient alien war
are making a desperate journey: Lot, son of a fiery prophet and carrier of an
insidious virus that spreads a cult-like religious mania among those it
infects; Urban, Lot’s boyhood friend from the city of Silk, and a man in search
of challenge and adventure; Clemantine, cast adrift when her world was
destroyed and yearning for revenge; and Nikko, sometimes a living man, but
always, the ship’s disembodied mind.
They are bound into
unknown territory. Ahead of them loom vast, lightless clouds of dust and gas
where stars are born, and where the alien Chenzeme are believed to live. The
Chenzeme are an enigmatic race, whose automated warships have ravaged the
living worlds of the galaxy’s Orion arm for millions of years... but why? Null Boundary’s crew is driven to find
out — though in their quest to discover the source of the Chenzeme, they must also
explore the terrible truth of their own past, the meaning of revenge, and the

Memory
Linda Nagata
A quest, a puzzle, and multiple lives:
Jubilee is a bold young woman of seventeen, on the cusp of
leaving the security of her family home to seek out her own future. But her
life is thrown into tumult by a visit from a forbidding stranger who has come
looking for Jubilee’s beloved brother, Jolly — who is seven years dead.
Jolly died as a child, consumed in an unprecedented flood of
“silver”— a mysterious substance resembling a thick, glowing fog. Silver is a
force of both destruction and creation. Sometimes it dissolves what it touches,
at other times it randomly rebuilds structures from the lost past, but no
person caught within its reach has ever survived it.
And yet . . .
If Jolly is truly dead, how could this stranger know him?
And if Jolly is alive, how did he survive the silver? And where has he gone?
Jubilee soon discovers that the stranger is not the only person interested in
her brother’s fate.
Looming over all is the question of the silver’s nature and
purpose. Silver is rising in the world, flooding ever more often and more deeply
so that someday soon the world must drown in it.
Determined to find answers, Jubilee leaves home one step
ahead of a ruthless pursuit. The quest she undertakes will unlock the memory of
a past reaching back farther than she ever imagined.
