Jamie Russell, now a Confederate war hero, returns home to his family in Texas. Jamie's sister Emma has been shattered by the death of her true love at Valverde. Worried about her, their parents convince Jamie to escort Emma to visit her aunt in Galveston. 

Jamie soon discovers that Galveston is vulnerable to a Union attack. He returns to his unit and begs Confederate officers to strengthen Galveston's defenses. Meanwhile Union warships arrive in Galveston Bay, taking it for the Federals and confirming Jamie's worst fears. I was not a Civil War enthusiast when I set out to write historical novels.  As I wrote about the New Mexico Campaign, I became fascinated by this quintissential American conflict, which still underlies our culture today.  I also became intrigued by the artillery, and decided to follow the Valverde Battery through its further adventures in Texas and Louisiana.  I hope you'll enjoy the story as much as I enjoyed writing it.

Sometimes good scenes are cut for reasons of length, or because they do not advance the main plot.  These scenes were removed from The Betrayal for such reasons.
