Authors Team up to Fight Oil with Ink

Book View Café to publish benefit anthology for Gulf relief

(National), July 6, 2010 — As millions of gallons of oil continue to spill into the Gulf, writers across the nation are teaming up to fight the devastation with art. BREAKING WAVES: An Anthology for Gulf Coast Relief will be released from Book View Café on September 15th.

“I was devastated by the disaster,” says Tiffany Trent, editor-in-chief for the anthology. A Young Adult and nature writer, Trent conceived of the anthology as a way for writers to assist in the environmental clean-up and recovery. “I knew the most important thing I could do was to bring hope. And the best way I know how to do that is through writing.”

The collection will feature stories by a wide range of best-selling and award-winning authors, including a previously-unpublished poem from Nebula and Hugo award-winner Ursula K. Le Guin, as well as a chapter from Rachel Carson’s groundbreaking book The Sea Around Us. Also included are stories of environmental rescue and recovery from Vonda McIntyre, Judith Tarr, and Deborah Ross. Phyllis Irene Radford will assist with the editing.

Book View Café (http://www.bookviewcafe.com), the Internet’s largest professional author cooperative, will be handling the anthology’s production and distribution, ensuring it will be ready-to-read for the latest generation of e-readers and cell phones. Before taking on the Breaking Waves project, Book View Café produced several other original anthologies, including the original “The Shadow Conspiracy,” which contains “The Persistence of Souls,” nominated for this year’s Sidewise Award.

“We are delighted to put our experience to work for this important project,” said Sarah Zettel, an award-winning science fiction author and managing director of Book View Café. “What’s happening in the Gulf affects all of us, and we all need to do what we can to help alleviate the burden on the people and the environment.”

One hundred percent of the anthology’s proceeds will go to the Gulf Coast Oil Spill Fund of the Greater New Orleans Foundation.
